Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced on Monday that he was taking a medical leave of absence to concentrate on his health.  The U.S. stock markets were closed on Monday, for Martin Luther King day, but markets in Europe saw Apple shares drop by as much as 8 percent. This is the third medical leave of absence for Jobs in the last 10 years.  His first was for treatment of a rare form of pancreatic cancer, and his second was for a liver transplant.  Both times these details were not available until after he returned.  That is the case this time as well.  While there are no details as to why or how long he will be gone, Jobs will remain as CEO of the company, while Cheif Operating Officer Tim Cook w...

Apple had better hurry up and introduce the second generation iPad soon.  Although many have laughed at the paucity of serious competitors, CES showed us that the product category is far from being ignored. Samsung showed off its "7 Series" notepad, with slide-out keyboard that also places the screen in a standard laptop position. Apple currently occupies 57 buildings and is reportedly bursting at the seams.  The new campus, which housed HP desktop computer division as well as a high-tech briefing center for showing clients new products, will allow Apple to expand its staff for products such as iPad and the new iPhone for Verizon. I find the timing of this news interesting as we witness the parallel decline in netbook sales, of which HP is a major player, while...

An Apple-1 computer was auctioned off last week, for a winning bid of £133,250, or roughly $211,535 -- not bad, considering that the original sale price was (believe it or not!) $666.66. According to the Wall Street Journal, a spokesman for Christie's in London called it "a record for a personal computer sold at auction." Besides the machine itself (with its 8-bit 6502 microprocessor and 8K RAM), the lot included a letter from a certain "Steven Jobs" with his parents' return address. I always though the Apple-1 was a prototype, but apparently about 200 sold back in 1976 and only a few still left around today. And it's got all of the original materials included, apparently, incl...
